One Thousand Cranes by Lucy Rose

My lovely friend Lucy who lives in Cardiff is currently at Uni and has just got an A for her final piece of the year.

I just had to put this on my blog to share this with you.  We stayed with them last Monday night and got to see all these cranes, it took her forever to do them and she went through a fair amount of pain to get the end result - lots of paper cuts and sores bless her.  It was all worth it in the end as she got her A - really pleased for her.

This is her artist statement

One thousand cranes...

The folding of one thousand origami cranes is an ancient Japanese tradition whereby on completion you are granted one wish. Often given to a couple embarking on marriage, it’s given as a sign of good luck, to bestow prosperity and one thousand years of good fortune upon its recepients.

It is said that the folding of one thousand cranes represents the commitment, time, perseverance and determination needed to make a good marriage work. As with any marriage to have a strong bond these actions are vital.

I embarked on this project to make one thousand cranes as a good luck token upon my own marriage. The cranes are representative of our love for each other, our commitment and determination to live a long and happy life together.

The video piece represents the notions of love... The heavy wonderful feeling of spiralling in love with someone, the freefall of joy and happiness, but they also represent the feeling of falling out of love, of being lost and feeling alone, then furthermore that place in-between where you just float by in a sort of flux, neither feeling deeply in love nor deeply apart, just there, together, not bothered. It encompasses all love, you take from it the bits you want to, the sentimentality, the negativity or the indifference.

The work is supported by the cranes which encompass the project and my one wish. A show of my dedication, love and desire for happiness. They are in a state of ’fallen’ placed as they would be if they had fallen from the sky, as they have done in the video piece.

Such a beautiful statement - you can watch the video she put together here.

Once you've read the above and then watched the video you will be completely moved, the music, images, lighting and of course the understanding of the representation.

Lucy and Matt are getting married in Marbella in July this year and they are actually going to transport all these cranes with them and have them placed in front of them during their wedding service - absolutely beautiful.

Well done Lucy - you are a true artist
